Nokia implements its modular data center interconnection solution to extend the ESpanix peering platform

okia has announced that it has implemented an optical and modular Data Center Interconnection (DCI) solution for ESpanix, the largest neutral Internet exchange provider in Spain. The solution connects three data centers in the Madrid metropolitan area by using dual optical links between the data centers for redundancy purposes . With an initial capacity of 4 Terabits per second (Tb / sec) between data centers, the solution will allow ESpanix to provide more reliable and responsive connectivity to meet the rapidly growing Internet connectivity needs of its customers.

The solution is based on Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Interconnection - Modular (PSI-M) , a compact, modular and optimized platform for DCI, with scalability and pay-per-use adapted to growth. The 1830 PSI-M uses Nokia PSE-3 consistent DSP (Digital Signal Processor) programmable modules to maximize capacity and performance in the face of growing cloud and video traffic demands. Its redundant design meets stringent network reliability requirements.

ESpanix has implemented the Nokia 1830 PSI-M units to support multiple client-side interfaces at speeds up to 400G to meet growing traffic needs. Each of these units supports dual line interfaces and multiple 400G wavelengths to provide high capacity connectivity between the data centers that host your Internet peering platforms. The solution is ready to adapt to future needs for bandwidth, capacity and reliability, including support for ring topologies to connect additional data centers and provide greater network robustness between your peering platforms.

Cristobal López Cañas, manager of the ESpanix Association of network operator providers, said: “Our strategy is to anticipate the growth of Internet traffic and maximize the performance of our network to meet the expectations of our partners and thus have Internet exchange services that are reliable and affordable; both today and in the future. We chose Nokia's PSI-M solution for its cost-competitive density, high-capacity performance, and ease of operations, allowing us to rapidly expand optical capacity to meet the growing demand for services from our partners. The operators and service providers associated with ESpanix are totally dependent on the ESpanix network nodes distributed through the main data centers in Spain to ensure a safe and fast Internet traffic exchange ”.

Manuel Ortiz Fernández, Senior Vice President of EMEA Webscale business at Nokia , said: “During the pandemic, ESpanix experienced a significant increase in traffic, which tripled in a few months to exceed 1.2 Tb / sec. As the demand for games, telecommuting, cloud services and online entertainment continues, Nokia is pleased to have been able to help ESpanix rapidly multiply its network capacity by 10 to meet the current needs of its customers ”.
